Bunions Causes and Treatment

Most often found on the inner foot near the big toe but sometimes located on the fifth toe, bunions are a painful, yet common condition caused by inflammation of the bursa. Bursa resides in the connective tissues of the bodies and is essentially a small fluid filled sac. At Kitsap Foot and Ankle Clinic, a certified podiatrist such as Dr. David Gent can reduce the inflammation and thickening of these sacs that create a problematic bone formation forcing the toe out of alignment causing great discomfort to the patient.

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. Pain, redness and extreme sensitivity are to be expected as bunion growth progresses and the affected toe is pushed out of alignment. The signs and symptoms of a bunion include: a bulging bump on the outside of the base of the big toe, swelling, redness, or soreness around the big toe joint, thickening of the skin at the base of the big toe and restricted movement of the toe itself. Because a bunion occurs at a joint where the toe bends in normal walking, wearing tight, narrow shoes might make them worse.

When proper alignment is not used while standing, walking and participating in athletics, the integrity of the feet may be compromised and pressure can build throughout the foot. There are several viable treatment options available for bunions. At Kitsap Foot and Ankle Clinic., Dr. David Gent can help begin the process of eliminating pain associated with this condition.
